CSR Positioning Centre
For Handsets
Description
No single positioning technology can meet the demands of all LBS applications and that’s why CSR’s high-performance Positioning Centre provides a wide array of carrier-grade position capabilities, engineered specically to satisfy mobile operators. This solution extends CSR’s industry-leading satellite and terrestrial location capabilities to a broad range of devices by conforming to SUPL and emergency mandates.
Key features
- OMA SUPL Positioning Centre (SPC) Functionality
- CSR-hosted Global Reference Network (GRN) for GPS and GLONASS
- Provides server based Wi-Fi positioning
- OTDOA/IPDL for LTE
- Server-based fusion of LTE OTDOA and GPS ranging measurements
- Matrix technology eliminates need to calibrate LTE OTDOA for varying antenna tower heights
- Matrix technology enables Observed Time Delay (OTD) positioning for GSM/UMTS without costly LMUs
- Enhanced Cell ID (E-CID) using Timing Advance (TA) and Network Measurement Results (NMR)
- Server based Wi-Fi positioning for SUPL 2.0 devices
- Meets emergency mandates E911, E112 via 4G LTE location
Benefits
Location Based Services (LBS) have widely varying requirements for accuracy that must be fulfilled within the constraints of the physical environment and device capabilities. For example, turn-by-turn navigation requires GPS-quality accuracy, but mobile social networks may not require such precision. Furthermore, indoor and dense urban locations reduce the efficacy of GPS and LBS, and thus demand complementary positioning techniques such as Wi-Fi and OTDOA.
The CSR Positioning Centre (CPC) offers a wide array of location techniques (such as AGPS, OTDOA, E-OTD, E-Cell ID, Wi-Fi) to mobile operators. CPC generates more robust location estimates for LTE handsets by combining ranging measurements from both 4G BTS and satellites, improving performance in urban canyons and outdoor/indoor transition zones. Wi-Fi positioning leverages the proliferation of Wi-Fi Access Points to improve LBS performance deep indoors.
CSR’s Matrix technology enables E-OTD location in unsynchronised GSM/UMTS networks, delivering results superior to that of “Enhanced Cell ID” without the deployment of costly Location Measurement Units (LMUs). Furthermore, Matrix reduces the LTE OTDOA error due to variations in BTS tower heights without the need for costly calibration.
The CPC can also serve non-data subscribers when integrated with third party SMLC/SAS nodes that provide GSM/UMTS control plane interfaces.
